Feralwood Nursery

Feralwood nursery is a bare-root nursery specializing in wild foods, perennial vegetables, permaculture plants, wildlife plants, and natives of the eastern US. At the nursery we set ecological limits on infrastructure and off-site inputs to create vigorous, healthy plants and trees. The nursery is located at Ardea in Cleveland County, North Carolina, near Kings Mountain. Plants are dug and shipped during the dormant season, which is generally early November through March in our zone 7 region. Please read all relevant information below before placing an order.

Feralwood plants:

  • Plants at Feralwood Nursery are grown with a deep reverence for the land and the plant beings we send forth into the world.
  • Plants are grown and tended in a way that demonstrates and utilizes their natural vigor and ecological relationships.
  • In general, herbaceous perennials are grown in raised beds and propagated for the nursery as needed.
  • Trees are typically grown in air-pruning beds, allowing for a greater density of feeder roots to assist in their establishment after transplant.
  • For more information on Feralwood and its principles, please visit Embodiment and Feralwood.

Ordering:

  • In general, ordering goes live in August and ends the last week of March.
  • The nursery will do its best, on a case by case basis, to accommodate those that wish for orders to be held.
  • Plants are sold bare root during the dormant season, so be prepared to plant when ordering.
  • Being a bare root nursery in North Carolina, our active season is November through April, with rare pauses for the coldest and wettest parts of winter.
  • In order to keep roots and cuttings moist during transport, orders are packed in plastic bags with moist coir or peat moss.
  • If you are ordering plants for a non-profit or community-centered project please inquire about potential donations and discounts.

Shipping:

  • In general, “seed only” orders begins shipping in October, or as soon as the seed is ready.
  • Bare-root plants and trees begin shipping the first week of November.
  • Once dormancy sets in and the nursery is caught up with pre-dormancy orders, orders typically ship within 1 week of being placed. There are exceptions when there is a backlog, or extremely cold and wet weather is present.
  • You will be notified by email when you place an order, and you will receive another email with a tracking number once the order has shipped.
  • At present shipping is only available for the contiguous United States.

  • If you are interested, contact the nursery directly and include any questions, as well as the species of interest and the quantity desired.
  • Bulk discounts are on a tier as follows: 10 - 19 is 10% off, 20 - 49 is 15% off, 50 - 99 is 20% off, 100 or more is 25% off.

Wholesale orders:

  • While the nursery is open to discussing wholesale orders, by nature we are not a wholesale nursery.
  • As such, and in general, large-scale or wholesale orders are best inquired about in advance and/or early in the dormant season.
  • The nursery has accommodated wholesale orders for other nurseries and permaculture projects in the past and will continue to do so.
  • If you are interested in a wholesale order, contact the nursery with your interests and questions.

Contract orders:

  • The nursery defines contract orders as an agreement between the nursery and a client to grow x number of x plant species.
  • Because of the nature of the order, prices will generally run cheaper than bulk discounts.
  • This arrangement is generally intended for those that are working on a land project and have some foresight into their future needs.
  • With some exceptions, contract orders of tree seedlings will need to be discussed and agreed upon in the fall prior to the fall your order is to be fulfilled.
  • If you are interested in discussing a contract order, contact the nursery and include any relevant information to begin the conversation.
