The Allegheny chinkapin is also known as the dwarf chestnut. It is a large shrub reaching about 15 feet in height. Nuts are sweet and delicious, providing food for humans and wildlife, particularly turkey and grouse. Nuts are produced one per bur, and can be eaten as one would chestnuts. The nut’s smaller size makes them a good candidate for drying in-shell, which is often challenging to do with larger chestnuts.
