Orders come as rhizome cuttings in bundles of 4 and 12.
Common greenbrier (Smilax rotundifolia) is a woody perennial vine native to much of the eastern US.
An established patch can produce an abundance of wonderful wild vegetable food in the spring. This is when one can gather the vigorous tender shoots of the sprawling vine. These can be eaten raw or prepared much like asparagus. Like me, deer are a big fan of the shoots.
The plant is known as a good pollinator for native bees, wasps, and flies. The female plants also create edible fruit.
In more wild settings, a sprawling colony is a great place for vulnerable wildlife to bed down.
At this time the colony we are gathering rhizome cuttings from has not been sexed.
