European licorice (#3)
Orders come as 3 or 12 rhizome cuttings with buds present.
European licorice is a nitrogen fixing herbaceous perennial with roots that are sweet due to a high polysaccharide content. As with many polysaccharides, those in licorice are known to have medicinal benefit. Species of licorice are in a class of herbs that have been labeled adaptogens, which mostly means they help assist in stabilizing a range of physiological processes, particularly with extended use.
I enjoy chewing on the roots. One can also dig the roots in the dormant season to dry and add to beverages or other items as a sweetener.
In the right conditions, once established they will readily spread by underground rhizomes.
