Bare root, 1 year old seedlings. Hybrid hazelnut is a wind-pollinated shrub and fruiting is best when several shrubs are planted in close proximity.

Hybrid hazelnut seedlings carried here are grown from seed sourced from Nine Hazels Farm. Some of the best hybrid nuts I have seen. Shrubs tend to start bearing nuts 3 to 5 years after planting. Not available this year

Cortland: Seed originates from one mother tree named Cortland originating from the breeding work at Z’s Nutty Ridge. Here is what they have to say about Cortland:
The nuts from the mother tree are round, beautiful, tasty and very thin shell that you can crack by squeezing two in your hand.  The nuts are well filled and a very short husk that allows the nuts to fall freely to enable harvesting. Cortland grows upright with stiffer branches to 12+ feet tall at maturity and about 9 feet wide in bush form at 25 years of age.  If grown as a single stem tree it will be 14 feet and similar width depending on pruning. This tree is a very good producer in our field and very blight resistant (immune so far) after over 20 years.  Also, a wind tolerant excellent pollen producer with a long pollen shed.   Good for Zone 4b and warmer. Try in Zone 3!

Prodigy: Seed originates from breeding work at Z’s Nutty Ridge. Prodigy is a cross-pollination collective. Here is what they have to say about Prodigy:
We have been doing controlled crosses from only the very best of many thousands of trees we have planted.  We crossed the best mom and dad trees and planted the resulting seeds.  We eliminate any tree we do not find has acceptable characteristics. The best trees we are selling seeds from and most likely the pollen came from other Prodigy trees.  Husks are generally short and thin to medium shells with nuts medium to large.  Parent tree height varies from 6 to 12 feet after 10 years.
