Bare root. Established suckers.

Smooth sumac is the most common Rhus/sumac species encountered in my area, often colonizing clearcuts and forest edges. In various ways it is useful as a food and medicine. Primarily this species is known for its berries which can be steeped to make a lemonade-like beverage, or ground to make a tart spice. It is also a great pollinator shrub.

Forms magical colonies if given space.

Sumac species are a choice shrub for vegetable tanning leather. The leaves can be gathered in large quantities and used to tan leather due to the high amounts of tannins present.

Plants sold as suckers will often be cut back to about 12 to 16 inches in height to accommodate transplanting and stimulate new growth.
