bur oak (seed)
Prices of large seed, such as acorns and chestnuts, have some of the costs of shipping embedded in the price of purchase.
Mega bur oak seed: Image not shown. Acorns gathered from a single Mother tree producing an abundant crop of acorns weighing 25 to 40 grams each. Biggest acorns i have ever seen.
Jumbo bur oak seed: These acorns are collected from a single Mother tree that produces a heavy crop of acorns weighing around 20 grams each.
Large bur oak seed: Still significant in size, and collected from a number of various trees.
The above image shows me holding a Jumbo bur oak seed on the left, and Other bur oak seed on the right.
Bur oaks are known and desired for their acorns, which are large and have a very low amount of tannins present. They make a remarkable tree to plant, creating abundant food for humans, livestock, and wildlife.
If planted in an open setting, with plenty of room to grow and good access to sunlight, you can expect the bur oak to produce acorns earlier than other oaks. In some cases this will be before 10 years time. I have heard as little as 8 in some observations.
There will always be a few extra seed thrown in.
Seed requires 30 to 60 days cold stratification.
