winged sumac - root cuttings (#3)
Orders come as 4 or 12 root cuttings. Cuttings taken from female plants. Sumac is dioecious.
Winged sumac is a common native shrub in my area. From my observations it is the best pollinator-supporting shrub we have around, comparable to the populations attributed to mountain mint species.
It is a marvelous thing to behold when in flower.
I do not find this species very useful for making sumac-ade, as with smooth sumac. However, it is a potent medicinal plant due to the high concentrations of resins and other compounds present in the root and bark.
Sumac species are a choice shrub for vegetable tanning leather. The leaves can be gathered in large quantities and used to tan leather due to the high amounts of tannins present.
We offer root cuttings from plants identified as females. It requires pollination from male plants for fruit production.
To encourage root formation on root cuttings: Let the cut ends form a callous (optional, in my experience). Then cover them, laying horizontally, with one to two inches of moist sand in the dormant season. Shoots should emerge in the Spring. Success rate is great.
